The Australian Football League is calling on the country’s government to make ground breaking changes to gambling legislation so that in-betting will be allowed in live games.

The AFL is hoping to model the English Premier League that allows in-betting throughout soccer games, right up until the end. The AFL is thus calling for an amendment to the current Interactive Gambling Act.

“In-play betting is extremely popular worldwide as a form of gambling, and if consumers are not able to access it online in Australia, they might elsewhere with overseas operators,” said a submission by the AFL to the government. “It seems inconsistent that a consumer can bet 'in-play' via telephone but not online. Specifically, the AFL would like to suggest amendments to the Interactive Gambling Act 2001, such that betting online during sports events, or after an event has commenced, is no longer prohibited.”
