The method for calculating card value in baccarat is somewhat different from most card games.  The baccarat value system is: aces are worth one, two to nine are worth face value and ten to king are worth zero.  Additionally, when the total value is calculated, the first digit is dropped from any double digit total.  For example, a five and a six would be worth zero (5 + 6 = 11 = 1).  Therefore, nine is the highest baccarat total possible.

Like blackjack, each hand of baccarat begins with both you and the dealer receiving two cards.  You will each turn over both of your cards and add together their total value.  The goal of the game is to achieve the highest total possible.  However, in contrast to blackjack, you don't get to determine if you draw or stay.  The value of your cards is actually what determines your next move.  If either of you gets an eight or nine, no more cards are drawn.  If you get a total of zero to five, you draw one card.  If your total is six or seven, you stand.  The course of action the dealer takes is slightly more complicated, because it is determined by their hand, whether or not you had to draw a card, and the value of the card you drew.
