PokerStars.com, the industry’s leading online poker room, said that it would be running a super-sized tournament on December 28th and hoped to break the world record by doing so.

PokerStars said that it hoped to attract 35,000 people to participate in the one tournament, thus gaining a mention in the Guinness Book of World Records. It is believed that the guaranteed $500,000 prize pool is enough of an incentive for players to enter.

“This is an official attempt at the Guinness world record for World’s Largest Poker Tournament!” said a statement on the PokerStars site. “Each blind level will run for 10 minutes, making play in the tournament similar to a turbo. Tables will be 10 handed and the official prizes will be announced after the registration period closes. Players are permitted to sign up until two minutes before the tournament begins, which is at 15:30 ET on Sunday, December 28th.”
