In 1998 there were 350 players to the main event. Each poker player paid $10,000 to join the tournament. This World Series tournament was the only one with 5 players in the final table - Scotty Nguyen eliminated both en Roberts and Jan Lundberg" in the last hand before final. In the final hand in WSOP 1998 pre-flop came with J♦ 9♣ to Scotty Nguyen and Q♥ T♥ to Kevin McBride.
Kevin raised $50.000 and Nguyen called. The flop brought 8♣ 9♦ 9♥ giving a three of a kind to Nguyen. Experienced poker star Scotty Nguyen didn't raise – he check once again. McBride was trying to bluff and bet $100,000. Nguyen called. The turn gave Nguyen a full house with an 8♥. Nguyen checked again, and McBride bet another $100,000. McBride needed a J♥ to straight flush, but the river came with an 8♠, giving Nguyen a higher full house. Scotty bet $310,000, which meant McBride had to move all-in if he wanted the pot. Kevin called and play with the board cards. He thought it will be split pot, but it was big mistake. Scotty Nguyen left the table being the 1998 World Champion and took $1,000,000 prize money.
