There were 512 entrants to the WSOP 2000 main event. Each poker player paid $10,000 to enter the tournament.  Chris'  made a big mistake which might cost him the title. But that mistake turned out to be the way to get a world championship title.

Ferguson had A 9, and T.J Cloutier got A Q.

Cloutier thought that Ferguson didn't look strong enough with his hand. He moved all-in. Ferguson called.
The flop came with 2 K 4, giving no advantages to either player. The turn brought K, so the situation didn't change at all. Cloutier was probably sure of winnig this tournament.
The river, however, decided the winner – 9 gave Ferguson a pair of nines and the title of 2000 World Champion along with $1,500,000 in prize money.
