The 2002 World Series of Poker (WSOP) was held at Binion's Horseshoe Casino. There were 631 entrants to the main event so 15 more than year before. Each poker player paid $10,000 buy-in. It was the largest poker tournament (by prize pool) ever played in a brick and mortar casino at the time.
Final hand was played between Robert Vakornyi and Julian Gardner. Robert had Q♦ T♠, while Julian Gardner got J♣ 8♣. Vakornyi raised $90.000. | Robert Vakornyi | | Julian Gardner | | VS | |
Gardner called, and the flop came with Q♣ 4♣ 4♠. So Gardner had a flush draw and Vakornyi a pair of Queens. While Vakornyi carefully bet $50,000, Gardner attempted to scare his opponent and went all-in with $765,000. Vakornyi had no choice (with the highest pair) but to call. The turn brought T♦ giving Robert two pairs. The river T♣ gave Gardner a flush but unfortunately it also gave Vakornyi a full house and the 2002 Poker Champion title plus $2,000,000 in prize money. | | | | The Flop | The Turn | The River |
