839 poker players was in the WSOP 2003 main event. Each paid $10,000 to enter. Tournament was held at Binion's Horseshoe Casino. It was largest poker tournament ever played in a brick and mortar casino at the time. Many entrants, even the overall winner, won their "tickets" to WSOP in online poker tournaments.
The WSOP 2003 final table once again proved that any two cards can win the pot. Chris Moneymaker ($6.600.000 in chips) had 5♦ 4♠ vs. Sam Farha's ($1.800.000 in chps) J♥ T♦. | Chris Moneymaker | | Sam Farha | | VS | |
And didn't Moneymaker's hand look hopeless compared to Farha's? Believe us, it did. At first. Being as confident as always, Farha bet $100.000 from the small blind. Moneymaker called. The flop came with J♠ 5♠ 4♣ – now Moneymaker had a two-pair against Farha's pair of Jacks. Chris checked, Farha bet $175.000. Then Moneymaker check-raised $275.000, and Farha decided to move all-in. Chris called. Although the turn came with a blanc A♠, the river with its 4♥ gave Moneymaker full house, and he left the table bearing the title of the 2003 World Champion. | | | | The Flop | The Turn | The River |
