There were 5,619 players to the World Series Of Poker 2005 main event. Each paid $10,000 buy-in. Many entrants won their seat in online poker tournaments. All WSOP events were held at the Rio All Suite Hotel and Casino except the final two days of the Main Event which were held at Binion's Horseshoe Casino.

In 2005 final hand was played between Joseph Hachem ($40 million) and Steven Danneman ($16.35 million). Hachem was holding 7 3 and Danneman got A 3.

After the flop of 4 5 6 Hachem had his straight, but he checked. Danneman, confident with his hand bet another $700.000 and Hachem raised to $1.700.000. Danneman called.

When the turn came with A, Hachem bet 2.000.000. Dannemanhad the highest pair so he raised to $5.000.000. Hachem went all-in. Danneman called without hesitation. There was still some chance left for Steven to get split pot with a seven.
However, the river came with 4, and Hachem, the new World Champion, won the title and took $7.000.000 prize money.
